A functional CV structure puts more focus on your professional talents than it does on your employment history.

If you want to place more of an emphasis on your talents than on your professional development, a functional CV might be a great choice. And the functional resume structure gives you the most opportunity of impressing a hiring manager if you're a career changer, a job seeker with gaps in your work, or someone with a highly developed skill set.

Functional resumes are distinguished from standard chronological resumes primarily by the way that they group your expertise into skill categories as opposed to job titles. The greatest way to start a good CV is with a compelling resume summary, especially if you've been out of work for a while.

A resume summary gives prospective employers a quick snapshot of your education and work history. You should only list two or three of your most noteworthy duties and accomplishments in a bulleted list or a paragraph format at the beginning of your resume. The next step is to search the job description for resume terms you could use in your resume summary.

  • ADD YOUR SKILLS BY TYPE

Your skills will be emphasised more on your functional resume than on your employment history. A functional resume's abilities section is typically the same size as a chronological resume’s work experience section.

Select at least three skills that are closely relevant to the position you are going for when building the abilities section of your functional resume for an excellent CV. Give three or four examples in the style of bullet points for each talent you name.

Then, in order to convince companies that you can complete the job's criteria and deliver quantifiable results, you should include statistics to those bullet points.

  • BRIEF YOUR WORK HISTORY

On a functional resume, work experience is briefly mentioned in one section. Just include the names of the business you've worked for, along with each position's title.

Additionally, you are not required to include your previous job in any particular order because providing employment dates for those roles is optional.

Your employment experience section should reflect the fact that the major objective of constructing a functional resume is to minimise your chronological career history as much as is practicable.

  • ADD YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Simply put the name of your college or organisation, the city and state where you attended, the degree you obtained, and your GPA (if it was greater than 3.5) in the education section of your resume unless it directly ties to the position you're going for.

  • INCLUDE YOUR PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Any honours you have received that are relevant to the position you want should be listed on your functional resume. By receiving an award, you can demonstrate that you have outperformed the competition and that you will make a useful employee.

Put all of your achievements in a separate "Awards" section on your resume if you have a lot of them. If not, you can include a note about them in your summary or skill bullets.

7 TIP-OFFS FOR WRITING A GOOD CV

  • When your done including the fundamental elements that are required for a top-notch CV, you can move on to adding some additional sections that are required for the job description you've chosen. Use the titles that the word processing program provides.
  • Pick a straightforward font type like Times New Roman, Arial, or Helvetica. Use only black font in sizes 10 to 12.
  • Avoid using colour and images, and if you have used the CV Builder, remove it.
  • Don't oversell yourself on your resume or try to cover up any shortcomings.
  • Use online grammar checkers to check your writing for problems before submitting your CV, and ask a friend or colleague to read it over before you submit it.
