A good resume can well organize your job process, helping you showcase your strengths and get one step closer to the job you’ve applied for. With some thorough work up front and by sticking to these 6 rules, you can turn this fundamental job search document into one of your strongest professional assets. When you’re ready to move your career, keep these 6 rules in mind as you create your resume.

Focus on the keywords:

Keywords plays the major role in the resume. Hiring managers expects you to speak their language and know the style of their industry. When they see the major keywords in your resume, it reinforces the idea that you are a perfect candidate for the role. Your keywords should include special job requirements, including your skills, competencies, relevant credentials, previous positions and employers. Make a list of keywords that fit your career goals.

Quantify your accomplishments

Numbers plays a key role when it comes listing your accomplishments. Even if your job doesn’t involve hard numbers, it is good to insert numbers and figures wherever possible. For example, “Managing a small sales team” can be changed to “Leading a team of 4 sales specialists”. Numbers and data help hiring managers envision the impact you could have in the organization.  When you quantify accomplishments in your resume, you speak the language that employers want to hear.

Cover all the basics

The goal of your resume is to perfectly represent your relevant skills and accomplishments:

  • Relevant work and volunteer experience. Don’t include everything you did in your past jobs. Instead, focus on achievements over responsibilities.
  • Relevant educational degrees or certifications. The importance of your educational background will vary based on the job or industry you’re interested in.
  • Contact information. Your full name, the city where you live, your email address and phone number. Because this personal information is sensitive.

Explore the resume

Always double check your resume before you submit it. There are some major things have to be checked like spelling, punctuations, phrases etc. Check other professional resumes and have a comparison with yours. This is a great way to uncover stronger ways to describe your experience or to avoid overused words.

Focus on presentation

Use mix of paragraphs and bullets to make your resume look clear and neat. There are some recruiters who will discount your resume the second they see a spelling or grammar error.
