If you are applying for a job, you will most probably be asked to submit a cover letter along with your resume. This is a norm when you are applying to most multinational companies. You must understand that the cover letter is almost as important as your resume in itself. Don’t spin out one just because it is a mandate for the job application process. There are employers out there who still read cover letters before they move on to your resume. It is not as tough a task to write a perfect one if you follow the basic rules.
Take inputs from your resume:
It could be time-consuming if you have to start writing a cover letter afresh. Start by taking inputs from your resume. Follow the pattern and language that goes on your resume. Once you start doing this, the flow will set in and you will have the contents for your cover letter ready in minutes.
Know the reader:
It is important that you customize your cover letter to the position that you are going to be using it for. A generic cover letter does not interest anyone. It only shows the employer that you have not taken the effort of doing basic research on the organization or the role that you are applying for. Once you’ve done the research, make sure you present it in the best possible fashion. Use the right language, spelling and grammar. If are not strong at language, use tools available online to have it proofread.
Personalize:
When you’ve taken the effort to learn about the organization that you are applying into, go that extra distance and try to find out the hiring manager’s name. Who does not like to see their name on a document they are reading, it sure would bring a smile to their face and when that magic happens, they give that extra time to go through your resume and look at everything written on it on a positive note. Ensure that you address them the right way. A misspelt name is a turn-off for many.
Keep it short:
Stay to the point. That’s the key to writing a perfect cover letter. Hiring managers come across multiple cover letters on a given day, stick to aspects that are relevant, and show them the value that you can bring to the table. You don’t have to necessarily elaborate on it. That is for you to present at the interview. A cover letter should give them the urge to meet you to know more.
A cover letter is as important as your resume for the job you are applying for. So make sure that you don’t give it a secondary priority.

“ All I can say is wow. You put this is a way that I could not. I would have never thought of how you did this and everything just stands out to me. I figured mine was too jumbled and would lose interest. From what I can see it is great. ”
