“Tell me about yourself”

Most of the interviews begin with the Hiring Manager asking, “So, tell me about yourself.” This question is to make you relax and comfortable, it’s also an open-ended question where you can tell the best of yours and use that time to impress the Interviewer. However, there is more to it than that.

“It's also a way of discovering how organised a person is in their thinking. Hiring Managers will be hoping to see some focus and clarity around why a candidate is interested in working for their organisation and what value they can bring to the company as an individual.”

Get yourself prepared for this question by thinking about the way the company presents itself on its website. How the organisation approach things like corporate social responsibility and career progression and? Ask yourself and discover if you have something in common and explain the aligned values during the interview. Actions which includes community activities, volunteering experience, or even any time you have spent overseas with the company.

It will also show your interpersonal skills, so take a deep breath and relax. Speak in a Confident, Friendly and Measured tone.

What to mention

To start with linking your answer to your CV. “You could say, ‘I've got a couple of interesting past experiences that I think are relevant to this position and I have outlined them in my CV, but let me tell you a brief about myself in those roles.’”

You could also include the top two or three descriptive words that align with your personality. You could also say something like, ‘My three core values are persistence, honesty and integrity.’ If they ask you for some examples for your values be immediate to explain it with more confidence. Being true and confident is matters.

What to avoid

Always stick to professional topics and do not deviate into your personal. This conversation is about you as a candidate.

“Your interviewer might be interested in knowing a little about your family and background, but always at a high level. Never get into how long you lived at home before you moved out, or what your brother’s doing overseas, or how much debt you have. It’s not going to sell you.

How much detail?

It good to spend no more than two or three minutes answering this question. If you're organised in your thought processes and you have figured out the links between your own experience and the values of the business, you'll have done the best you can in that time, so take your time to prepare and discover yourself.

Finish confidently

It is good to end your response by asking your interviewer if they have any questions about what you’ve just told them. This shows the confidence you have in yourself.
